Up-to-date Info on Library Services

We have understandably been hearing more and more questions about when the library might reopen and we wanted to provide an update on where our reopening plans stand.

The main reason we have not reopened at this time is that – like a lot of area businesses and organizations – our staff and their families have come into contact with COVID-19. For months, our staffing levels have been limited and unpredictable. We did not want to have a situation where we would have to open, close, open, close on short notice. We have chosen to provide a consistent amount of limited services instead of an unpredictable amount of full services.

Like other area businesses and organizations, when the library building was open, we had daily high-tension interactions with community members who chose to disregard our safety rules. These individuals unfairly took their frustration out on our staff. Staff felt unsafe and stressed dealing with unpleasant behavior everyday.

Additionally, we want our decisions to be data-driven. We continue to watch local new infection rates in the Plymouth community, and we continue to listen to the updates and recommendations from the Sheboygan County Department of Public Health. The seven-day average in the Plymouth community has started to decrease but is still alarmingly high.

We are working on plans to reopen once daily new infections rates in the Plymouth community fall to a manageable number. We are hopeful the COVID vaccine will allow us to offer library services at full capacity in the not too distant future. But in the meantime, we will reopen at limited capacity when we feel safe to do so. We would be even more confident in our reopening plans if we knew staff would no longer be harassed for enforcing the policies we have chosen for our library to keep everyone safe.

We may experience extra demand on our phone lines. When you call us at 920-892-4416 please have your library card number, current phone number, and current address for staff to look up your account. If you do not get through, please try again or contact us via email at plref@monarchlibraries.org or via Facebook Messenger.

Due Dates and Late Fees
Due dates have returned to normal. We are now a fine free library. No late fees will be charged.

Item Returns
Please return materials all materials in our outdoor bookdrop located on the outer wall of the library to the right of the main entrance off of Division Street. Please note that we will be quarantining all returns for 24 hours based upon updated guidance from the Department of Public Instruction. This will mean that items will remain on your account for several days after you return them. There will be NO late fees so please do not worry about overdue charges.

Card Renewals
Please call us at 920-892-4416 or email us at plref@monarchlibraries.org if you have trouble with an expired library card. Be sure to include your current address and phone number so that we can update your card.

Public Wifi
Our Wifi remains on and can be accessed just outside our building.

Interlibrary and System Loans
Delivery within the Monarch Library System has resumed in a limited capacity. For the safety of our delivery drivers and staff we are quarantining materials for 24 hours based upon updated guidance from the Department of Public Instruction. It is taking longer than normal for materials to be transferred between libraries. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Delivery from other libraries around the state (known as ILL) have not resumed. We do not know when statewide services will be available.

Event Closures
All library events and meeting room reservations have been canceled for for the foreseeable future. The meeting room is currently being used for furniture storage and materials quarantine.
